Answers on the Fractional Question
As
part of The Aspen Times' election coverage, we
have asked all 11 candidates to answer questions
about various issues facing the city. We've grouped
the mayoral candidates in with the City Council
candidates because they all sit on the same board
and make decisions on the same issues. We will
conclude this portion of our election coverage
tomorrow, in the Sunday edition of The Aspen
Times.
Today's question: Can Aspen remain a viable resort if its lodge rooms continue
to be converted to time shares and condominiums? What, if anything, should
the city do to stop this trend?

Jerome buyers: No fractional units
By
Scott Condon
Aspen Times
The
family negotiating to buy the Hotel Jerome
has vowed to buck the trend that is sweeping
the Aspen real estate industry.
The Gaylord
family isn't saying much about their plan,
but they have made it clear through a spokeswoman
that the Hotel Jerome will remain a traditional
type of hotel.
"It will not be fractional ownership," said Allison Scott, director of communication
and public relations at The Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs.

Real estate report shows '05 could be a monster
By
Scott Condon
Aspen Times
Real
estate sales in Pitkin County during the
first quarter of this year wiped out last
year's record pace.
Sales for the first three
months of this year hit $430.45 million.
That is an increase of about 50 percent from
sales of $288.11 million for the same period
last year, according to data collected by
the Land Title Guarantee Co. The title company
researches all deeds filed with the Pitkin
County clerk's office.
"
If these numbers are projected out to the
end of the year we would have $1,721,812,400
in sales in Pitkin County this year, which would be a new record," wrote Jim
Pomeroy, director of marketing for Land Title Guarantee Co. in a report he prepares
for real estate agents and business officials.
Sales topped $1.6 billion last
year.
